Ingredients: Ingredients: Water, 20% spiced rum (preservative), Sagittarian sun, hope for your flourishing.
I made the mother essence of Marrickville Rose under a Sagittarius sun in November 2020. It was the first essence I made myself, and I felt pulled towards the mature, gnarled, very thorny red rose bush outside my house. It guards my front gate, sometimes reaching out to remind me it has teeth as I brush past.
I live on a busy road in Sydney’s inner west, a place where the drone of traffic and planes is continuous, where the sun in Summer feels especially unforgiving, and the natural world sometimes feels far away. The leaking roof of the house I live in will attest that that it’s been a rental for years, and the overgrown, untended garden hasn’t had the care it deserves from its previous (and, admittedly, current) tenants.
In the midst of all that of that – noise, pollution, neglect – the rose bush blooms.
It’s taller than me now, bursting with bright red flowers, home to a whole city of orb spiders and other insect citizens, a thorny ecosystem that continues with the business of living, no matter what goes on around it.
In offering its essence, it offers the possibility that we, too, can flourish in the midst of crisis or neglect. We take this essence in the hope that we, too, can do the thing we were planted here to do, even when the conditions are imperfect. We, too, can make a home in a hostile world, and be fruitful, abundant, beautiful.
A year has passed since the rose bush and I collaborated on the mother essence, and I thought it would be a good time to offer this thorny, healing elixir to the world. These bottles were poured and blessed a year to the day after the mother essence of Marrickville Rose was made.
Marrickville Rose essence is for resilience, persistence, adaptability, hospitality, flourishing, protection, and beauty. Take 2-4 drops when you wish to cultivate these qualities, under your tongue or in whatever you’re drinking.
The fine print: Flower essences attend to our emotional, spiritual, and energetic selves. They don’t, and I don’t, claim to treat or cure any medical conditions. This essence contains alcohol, so isn’t recommended if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Flower essences contain the energetic imprint of a plant, not any physical parts of a plant, so they will not cause any allergic reactions or trigger intolerances.
