The Orphic Tarot deck revolves around the theme of life-death-rebirth, with its recurrent references to the myth of Orpheus, his symbolic descent to the Underworld, and his return to the land of the living.

Created by Skyweb, the Orphic Tarot is particularly indicated for shadow-working, self-healing and medium channeling. It has a powerful, solemn and firm energy, akin to “the eye of the Typhoon” kind of electric quietness.

The main source of inspiration and information for the development of Orphic Tarot is the Orphic Hymns, a collection of 87 short religious poems composed in either the late Hellenistic (C3rd or C2nd B.C.) or early Roman (C1st to C2nd A.D.) era. They are based on the beliefs of Orphism, a mystery cult or religious philosophy which claimed descent from the teachings of the mythical poet and mystic Orpheus.

Every card of this deck features a deity, a nymph, a titan/titaness or a demi-god who are evoked in the Orphic Hymns, with a view to matching their energies with those of the Tarot cards and creating strong correspondences.

For instance, The Empress is embodied by Gaia, (mother Earth), whereas The Emperor is represented by her mythological counterpart, Ouranos (father Sky). The artist’s objective in doing so, is to honor both the ancient wisdom of the Orphic mysteries and the esoteric knowledge of Tarot.

Why the black/white/red color palette?

Black, white and red are the three sacred colours to the Triple Goddess in her aspect of Maiden, Mother and Crone. They are also connected to the moon phases (waxing, full, waning), and, by proxy, to the menstrual blood, the breastmilk and the darkness before birth.  Some cards in this deck will also display dashes of orange, purple, pink, blue and yellow, to better express the attributes they incarnate.

Due to printer error, there are two Page of Pentacles cards inside the box, and the Page of Wands (which was missed by the printer the first time around) will be included outside the box, to be added into the deck when you open it. Please remember to switch the additional Page of Pentacles for the Page of Wands before shuffling so your deck is complete!

Additionally, the booklet is missing the page for the Knight of Swords, however, the artist has kindly provided replacement copies of this page, which are included with the deck and can be pasted in or simply tucked into the booklet, according to your preference.

All orders will receive a corrected and updated digital booklet, which also includes card images for reference (this will be sent via email after your purchase is finalised).
